Bristol Bites: A Brick Too Far

From our editor:

An American TV show called Schitt’s Creek became something of a comedy classic from 2015 to 2020. It’s about a family that falls from hedonistic wealth to hard times (well worth looking up).

Now it seems that some of the van dwellers parked up alongside Clifton Downs have been rumbled for creating their own version of Schitt’s Creek. Only this time, using human excrement instead of whip-crack gags.

Finally, Bristol City Council has had enough of the 100-strong fleet of mobile homes (some more immobile than mobile). The discovery of what can only be described as shit pits on cherished parkland, frequented by kids and dog walkers, prompted the authority to act. Scroll down for the story in our news section.

The council says (quite rightly) that human waste represents a serious public health hazard. The BBC reports that there are plans to clear the van-dwelling “community” from the Downs. It is a project not without its difficulties. These people will have to go somewhere, as it were.

Local residents opposed to the vans have previously been accused of NIMBYism - the shabby vehicles spoiling their enjoyment of a Bristol beauty spot.

Defenders of the van dwellers claim (with some justification) that housing rental prices and shortages have fuelled the issue. Others argue that people are entitled to live how they choose (even if they don’t pay council tax, unlike the vast majority of Bristolians who do).

But in the court of public opinion, relative affluence beats egregious effluence every time. Some of the van dwellers have done their “community” a disgusting disservice, simply by pulling their pants down in a public place (which happens to be a criminal offence). They have lost the argument - hook, line and stinker.

The Greens, who lead Bristol City Council, are in favour of natural farming and fertilisers. But, clearly, human defecation is a brick too far.

We are all entitled to our life choices, within the limits of the law. Dumping on the Downs is not one of them.

Bristol Bears

First, an apology. Last week, I wrongly reported that Bristol’s next premiership fixture was away to Exeter. The Bears do travel to the Chiefs tomorrow (3pm), but it’s an English Prem Cup match. The next premiership meeting is against high flying Northampton Saints at Ashton Gate on Saturday 29 November (5.45pm). Sorry for the blunder.

The Autumn International week just gone gave two of Bristol’s superstars the chance to shine. New boy Louis Rees-Zammit scored an excellent one-handed try for Wales in a nail-biting 24-23 win over Japan in Cardiff.

Meanwhile, the bulldozing Bear Ellis Genge put in a 25 minute cameo in a fantastic 33-19 England victory over New Zealand at Twickenham.

Bristol City

Not much to report thanks to the international break. The Robins lie eighth in the Championship, two points off the playoff places.

A golden thread for City is the form of free-kick maestro Scott Twine. He scored a blinder away to Watford last time out to take his goal tally to six for the season.

Next up, Swansea at the Gate tomorrow in a lunchtime kick off.

Bristol Rovers

The prevailing mood at The Memorial is gloomy. Not quite doom and gloom, but getting close. The Pirates desperately need a win away to Cheltenham tomorrow (3pm) to avoid being sucked closer to the League 2 relegation zone.
