Bristol Bites: Gourmet delights and raw pace

Our good friends at the brilliant Bristol Food Newsletter bring tidings of joy. Bristol’s reputation for high-quality dining has just gone rocket launched.
One Fish Street on Chandos Street in Redland stands out (BS6 6PG). The girls and boys from St Ives have taken their Cornish seafood sorcery (should that be saucery?) to our fair city. Enjoy.
On a more solemn note, Bravas – a Cotham Hill tapas institution – is struggling with planning permission for its new terrace. A place where people might, perchance, live, love and laugh. Give Bravas your support in whatever way you can.
Bristol Bears tackled the fearsome Leicester Tigers at Ashton Gate on Sunday. The Gate rocked. 17-17 at half-time, the Bears then roared their way to a resounding 42-24 victory in the second half.
Ashton Gate, as mentioned previously in this column, has become part of Bristolian geography. It’s so much more than simply kicking balls and hurling mad passes. It’s about the people who turn up to make the stadium a throbbing, loving and, occasionally, bonkers part of the community.
The founder of this newsletter, Mark Riley (someone I am, grudgingly, obliged to describe as “my boss”) was in attendance at the Bears-Tigers match. He owns (and wears) a lot of Bears merch. Borderline super fan.
Prior to the game, I was given a mild ticking off for trying to weave in mentions of Bristol’s new signing, Louis Rees-Zammit, into the Bristol Bites newsletter. The Welsh wizard on the wing. “You are Welsh and therefore biased”, I was told.
And then the tune changed. LRZ (is he a man or a supercar?) sprinted 60 metres in a straight line to score a wonder try to seal a wonderful victory, sending the Gate faithful into raptures and, I am reliably informed, revelry. Rees-Lightning has only played one match for the Bears, but he has already electrified the Gate.
Mark (my boss): “Phenomenal!”
Me: “I did tell you he was good.”

Bristol stands as England's premier recycling city among core urban areas, achieving an impressive 48% household recycling rate in 2024 while maintaining this position for eight consecutive years.
Among England's eight core cities, Bristol leads by a substantial margin of 9.2 percentage points over its nearest competitor, Manchester, which achieves 38.8%.
Bristol City Council collected 192,291 tonnes of waste in the year ending March 2023, equivalent to approximately 116,540 hippos in weight
The city's waste processing demonstrates exceptional environmental performance:
Only 1.5% (2,834 tonnes) sent to landfill, among the lowest rates in England
51% (99,093 tonnes) processed through energy-from-waste incineration
48% successfully recycled, composted, or reused
Bristol’s six-container recycling system is one of the most complex in the UK but offers significantly more source separation than most other major cities.
