Bristol Bites: Best for start-ups and sport

It’s official. Bristol is the number one city in Britain for start-ups, according to the Next-X Start-Up Index. Beating off stiff competition from the likes of Cambridge, Leeds and Edinburgh. I usually take league tables with a pinch of salt. But this one may have a grain of truth buried in there.
Bristol boasts an innovative ecosystem. Emerging sectors like AI, quantum computing, semiconductor manufacturing and health tech.
The university community in the city is vibrant and vital. Bristol is a place where young, talented people can live, love, learn, and laugh.
From start-ups to sport. The Ashton Gate Stadium is firmly established as part of Bristol’s architecture. More than that. It’s part of the Bristolian community, woven into our very fabric.
The Gate hosted the England women’s rugby semi-final win over France (hard fought, but ultimately comfortable) to earn the right to face Canada in tomorrow’s World Cup final. The action on the pitch was something to behold. But the food, drinks and live music on the concourse make Ashton Gate a special place to visit. Great credit to Steve Lansdown and his team. They have created an amphitheatre that brings joy to the heart, a spring in the step and – win, lose or draw – a wry smile to the face.
The Gate is, of course, home to the Bristol Bears – the most lunatic attacking rugby team on the planet. Regular readers of this column may have cottoned on to the fact that I am a big fan of Ellis Genge – the Lion-Bear bulldozer. A true Bristolian and an awesome player. Sunday sees the Bears face Leicester Tigers. Let’s hope new Bristol signing – “Lightning” Louis Rees-Zammit – gets a run out on the wing.
The Gate is also home to Bristol City – on the football naughty step for capitulating to a 3-1 home defeat to lowly Oxford United. My counterpart, Mark Skipworth (Editor of our sister newsletter Oxford Outlook) wasted little time in rubbing it in with a large tub of glee (available at all reputable DIY stores).
Well, just look at the table, Mr Skipworth. The Robins lie third, while Oxford languish in 20th in the Championship. And the table never tells fibs.
