Bristol Airport - more planes amid growing pains

Bristol Airport Breaks Records – But Faces Climate Backlash
Our international airport continues to divide opinion depending on your priorities - economic growth or environmental concerns. Personally, I am grateful for the numerous destinations accessible from Bristol airport, its proximity, and speedy security. However, the car park charges are a significant cost for Uber drivers and family drop-offs.
It welcomed more than 10 million passengers last year – the busiest in its history. The milestone marks a strong recovery after the pandemic and cements the airport’s role as a gateway to more than 120 destinations worldwide.
The economic benefits are clear. The airport contributes around £2 billion a year to the South West economy and has invested £400 million in upgrades, including a new £60 million transport hub that opened in July.
But behind the growth figures lies a storm of controversy. Bristol was recently named the UK’s third-worst airport for reliability, with passengers facing average delays of 22 minutes and nearly 1% of flights cancelled.
Even more divisive are the expansion plans. The airport aims to expand to handle 15 million passengers annually by 2040. Green councillors have branded the move “reckless” during a climate emergency, and surveys show the vast majority of local residents oppose expansion. Campaigners say more flights will bring more traffic, noise, and carbon emissions – at odds with the airport’s pledge to reach net zero by 2030.
New owners Macquarie Asset Management are pushing for long-haul routes, including to North America, but the future remains uncertain. The plans face challenging planning hurdles and mounting community opposition.
For many in the region, the question is simple: should Bristol chase growth at all costs, or put the brakes on for the sake of the climate?

Bristol Airport achieved a major milestone in 2024 by serving over 10.4 million passengers for the first time in its history. This represents a 7% increase from 2023, making it one of the fastest-growing airports in the UK since the pandemic.
The airport was notably the fastest recovering airport post-COVID-19 in the UK in 2022, achieving approximately 90% recovery of its pre-pandemic passenger numbers.
The airport currently ranks as the 8th busiest airport in the UK and has planning permission to serve up to 12 million passengers per year.
With its single runway measuring 2,011 metres in length, Bristol Airport operates with a sustained capacity of 27 movements per hour during summer seasons.
The airport is a significant economic driver, currently supporting almost 4,000 direct jobs and approximately 23,000 jobs across the South West and South Wales region.
