Bristol Bites: Robins run a rapier through Baggy hearts

Let’s start with the good news. Bristol City beat promotion rivals West Brom 2-1 on Tuesday night, sending a disbelieving Ashton Gate into delirium. Scroll down to Sport for scenes of pride, passion and utter pandemonium.
The arrest of prominent local politician Dan Norris on suspicion of serious sexual offences is a gloomier tale – in stark contrast to the floodlit joy down at The Gate.
Mr Norris has had the Labour whip removed and Avon & Somerset police investigations remain ongoing. Comment on this case would be inappropriate (indeed, illegal).
However, there is a broader point to make. Mr Norris was elected as the Mayor of the West of England in 2021 (only to be elected as an MP in 2024 and so render himself ineligible to stand again as mayor). It was a bureaucratic change which saw the office of Bristol mayor abolished.
Quite why a city of Bristol’s stature and status doesn’t deserve a dedicated mayor defeats many Bristolians. Mr Norris may well face far more serious questions in the coming days. But quite why he chose to ditch the West of England in favour of the comfy green benches of Westminster may be one for him to consider.
On a happier note, artist Frank Morris is on a mission to sketch Bristol’s iconic pubs. Most people drink in them, but Frank is talented enough to draw them, too.

Bristol Rovers
Contrasting fortunes for The Pirates. Saturday’s 1-0 defeat away to Bolton followed hard on the heels of a 1-2 home loss to runaway League One leaders Birmingham City. No disgrace in such narrow reversals, but Rovers are in a real relegation scrap. The Pirates are three points clear of the relegation zone, but fellow strugglers Burton Albion have a game in hand. Shiver me timbers time down at the Mem Stadium.
