Bristol Bites: A Robin remembered and a resilient refugee

From the Editor
Many people simply don’t like football. Some people choose willfully to misunderstand it. But if you’re ever in doubt as to the meaning of the game to the people in this country, simply point to the story of Margaret Dodds. Over seventy years as a supporter of Bristol City, and more than a century on this planet, having sadly passed away in 2020, now her grandson carries the torch. Football is as deeply ingrained in our communities and local areas as regional dialects and accents.
But what a quintessentially Bristolian mix of stories this week. Besides the football-mad centenarian, we have a Somali refugee who drove Uber while completing his university studies. We have an academic project aimed at providing sustainable energy access in West Africa, new transport developments in the city and we have a homemade pepper-spray attack. Plus, we have a measles outbreak. Let’s hope this isn’t a worrying echo of Andrew Wakefield’s anti-MMR vaccine disinformation scandal.
Bristol can be barmy, yet so bright; a proprietary blend of grit, beauty and diversity. In an ever-changing city, Bristolians will always be protective of the old ways but welcoming of the new.
